News producer and journalist Rosie Garthwaite discusses her essential survival guide for dangerous places

Former Al Jazeera news producer and journalist Rosie Garthwaite will appear at Northwestern University on Tuesday to talk about her book How to Avoid Being Killed in a War Zone, published by Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing.
How to Avoid Being Killed in a War Zone combines Rosie Garthwaite’s own practical and down-to-earth advice with contributions from journalists and commentators including Rageh Omar and John Simpson who also share their experiences and guidance on surviving in difficult and dangerous situations.
Al Qursan Qatar University

The Department of Humanities at Qatar University in cooperation with Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing hosted an event to discuss Abdul Aziz Al Mahmoud’s debut novel Al Qursan, on Tuesday 1st November at 12pm at the Conference Room in the Administration Building, Qatar University. The event was moderated by Dr Fatma Al-Soweidi.

Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing is delighted to announce the publication and launch of Al Qursan by Abdul Aziz Al Mahmoud, which is BQFP's first Qatari novel.
Abdul Aziz Al Mahmoud will discuss his debut novel Al Qursan on Tuesday 18th October at 6pm at the Cinema in the Student Centre, Education City. The event will be moderated by Al Jazeera's Ali Al-Dhafiri and will be in Arabic To RSVP, please email bqfp.events@qf.org.qa. There will be a book signing after the event in Tribe Bookstore in the Student Centre.
Summer Writing Institute
May 29th – June 2nd, 2011
The SWI is a weeklong intensive course designed for writers who are interested in developing their craft in a particular genre with a group of other participants.
This year’s SWI will feature a “mini-MFA” experience where participants will be able to choose two tracks to take for each day. Tracks include Fiction, Poetry, and Non Fiction writing in English and Arabic and will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis.

World Book Day 2011
Each year on the April 23rd the world celebrates World Book Day (WBD). This year for WBD Qatar, Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing (BQFP) distributes one bilingual edition of a popular children’s book.
This year’s WBD book is Something Else (Shayun Akhr) by Kathryn Cave. BQFP is organizing a special visit to Qatar by the author and a public event on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at Al Bidda Park.
WBD is when publishers, schools, and community members come together in support of books and the love of reading.
In 2009, BQFP began celebrating WBD in Qatar and distributed the popular The Selfish Crocodile. In 2010 one thousand Qatari children received the best selling children's book The Gruffalo.
BQFP has organized celebrations with partner organizations including Qatar University, the Supreme Education Council, Gympanzee, and over fifteen independent schools including, Qatar Academy Al Khor, Khadija Bint Khuwaylid Kindergarten, Qadisiyah Independent Kindergarten, Qatar Educational Complex, and Qatar University Children’s Center. Supporting events like WBD Qatar is important in the overall mission of BQFP in promoting reading enjoyment amongst all ages in the community.

2nd Annual Literary Translation Conference
Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing (BQFP) in association with Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, is holding its second Literary Translation Conference.
Taking place for the first time in the Gulf region, the conference is designed to create a Gulf-based platform to discuss issues related to translation at both the theoretical and practical levels. Panels of top literary translators will discuss philosophies and strategies of translation in general. The conference sessions will be moderated by the award-winning international bestselling author Ahdaf Soueif.
In addition to attending the plenary discussions, groups of translators will meet in workshops with leading practitioners and educators to focus on various aspects of the craft in relation to Arabic/English and English/Arabic translation.
This conference was initiated by BQFP and part of its efforts to improve standards of Arabic language translation as well as editing of texts both into and out of Arabic and make it more accessible.

BQFP Children’s Literary Festival in Conjunction with Launch of Fall 2010 list

Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing (BQFP) proposes to host a literary festival in Doha, Qatar in December 2010 to further support the development of the emerging literary community in Qatar as well as feature prominent authors and speakers from the Middle East and international communities with a specialisation in children’s literature. The aims of the inaugural festival are in two major areas: to celebrate the best in children’s book publishing in Arabic and English as to promote a literary culture amongst school age children. It is intended that this will be an annual occasion organized by BQFP in conjunction with other local and international entities with similar goals. This will be Doha’s first International Children’s Book Festival, and will feature public events for schools and families as well as professional events for writers and illustrators of children’s books. Simultaneous interpretation will be available at all public events as well as an exhibition of best-selling and prize-winning picture books in Arabic and English.

Six Steps to a Story: Creative Writing Workshop with author Leila Aboulela. Her 2005 Bloomsbury title, Minaret, garnered much critical acclaim and was nominated for the Orange Prize and the IMPAC Dublin Award. The Sudanese novelist and playwright will be teachings six consecutive weeks to be held Sunday evenings between the hours of 17:00 and 19:00at the BQFP offices at Qatar Foundation. The workshop will begin on October 3 and conclude November 7, 2010. Because there are a limited number of spaces, early registration is highly recommended. There is a fee of 500 QR for the general public and 250 for student participants. Seminars are open to the public on a first come first, first serve basis and more registration is available online via their website. Writing workshop in Arabic with author Najwa Barakat

Renowned Lebanese writer Najwa Barakat was in Doha conducting a series of Arabic-language creative writing workshops entitled Mohtaraf: How to write a Novel. The three-day seminar ranfrom Sunday, September 26 to Tuesday, September 28 and consist of an intensive program to teach writers crucial skills and techniques that will aid them in composing their own novels. Sessions took place from 16:00 to 19:00 at the BQFP offices at Qatar Foundation. This workshop is modeled after an ongoing program held in Beirut, Lebanon which receives aspiring writers of all ages from the Arab world who are not only interested in the literature, but also theatrical and screenwriting. Space is limited, so applicants are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible.
“Telling Your Story” project with the Ministry of Culture and Sally Grindley

In partnership with the Ministry of Culture, BQFP will host UK children’s author, Sally Grindley to work with children from conflict zones; Palestine, Sudan, Iraq and others who are living in Qatar. Ms. Grindley will work with the children on creating their stories – with an Arabic translator – to produce a series of books by children about their experiences of their homeland. This is not the first visit by Ms.Grindley who has already visited Qatar in October 2009 to do a series of workshops related to writing for children. She is the author of the Fafa series to be published by BQFP in collaboration with the Al Jazeera Children's Channel.
Shared Summer Reading book club meetings in English and Arabic

BQFP is pleased to sponsor the 2nd annual Shared Summer Reading program. This program is open to all students, faculty, and staff of Qatar Foundation, College of the North Atlantic, and Qatar University. We are pleased to introduce an Arabic title for the first time in our reading scheme as well as an English title. Both titles are featured on the inaugural list of BQFP books launched in London and Doha this April.
